An ancient Greek depiction of the Titan Nereus (The Old Man of the Sea), being riden by Heracles on the top of a black-figured lekythos, c 590-580 BCE by the Istanbul Painter, now in the Louvre. In Homer’s Iliad, Nereus presides over the Mediterranean Sea and is the grandfather of Achilles, through his mother, the sea nymph Thetis.
